Interesting topic I am interested in seeing the outcome of this project. It looks simple but it will collect some much needed information. I will follow you and and watch how your research unfolds.
ReplyDeleteI'm also completing a project in which I will be surveying teachers on how they build positive relationships with their students. In what way will you be presenting your data collection to reflect the communication most preferred? How will you compare and analyze what the teaches have said versus the parents? I would like to compare ideas with you. Feel free to visit my blog at http://markwilczynski.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteLooks like you have a really good inquiry. I am interested in knowing the overall preferred method. Personally, I prefer emails as a form of communication from my administration; however, on occasion my district also uses ROBO calls. I prefer not to receive a ROBO call because the number from which the call is made is not a district number so in most cases when I don't recognize a number, I don't answer. If your district is not currently using this method, you may want to introduce it to the teachers and parents to see how they feel about this method. Good Luck! Pleae follow and comment on my blog at http://actionresearchwithhobbs1.blogspot.com. Good luck on your project.
ReplyDeleteWhat actions are you thinking you might take after all of this information comes in? Something free (campus blog, campus Facebook page, email list) or something that will be a financial investment (AlertNow or Blackboard to carry out ROBO calls and blanket emails, a digital message sign on a busy thoroughfare near the school)? Are you looking specifically at how the campus as a whole (administration, PTA, campus groups) communicate with large groups of parents, or how individual teachers reach individual parents? I, too, am seriously interested in following your research whichever way you take it. Right now, I feel like this is one of the biggest hot button issues in our lives as educators. I think back to the discussion boards from our last class, and so many of our colleagues wrote about the deteriorating relationship between campus and the homes from whence our children come. If we don't figure out better ways of letting the folks at home know that we are also in search of that which is in their child's best interest, this feeling of animosity toward teachers and the campus as a whole is going to eat us all alive. I wish you the best of luck in your research, and I look forward to learning what you find out.
ReplyDeleteWe now have a Facebook page and have the ROBO call ability, and we have the digital message sign in front of our school which is a very busy road. I am discovering that we have all these resources and it is becoming a job in it's self to keep up with posting information and maintaining websites. Technology is the future and the future is now and I progress in this research it is showing that we have what we need it is just using it to its full ablity. Money is always the answer, we need someone the run the information system as their job. Thanks for the well wishes and I hope I can come up with some positive results.
DeleteI was wondering how you will get out the word of the survey?
ReplyDeleteI am not sure of the SES of you parents but how many have no connectivity and cannot partisipate in the survey?
Communication is huge when we are always trying to seek parent support. Do you have any information that leads you to think the parents are not satisfied with the current state of communication?
The teacher survey will be the easy part as far as getting out the word, the parents will be a little more tricky. But what I want to do is use several different ways for parents to answer questions about how they feel about the present forms of communication the school uses to get information to them. We are a mix SES but mostly middle income and I do realize that not all houses have internet. I was thinking of just sending home a form and asking parents to fill it out and send it back, we know that not all will particiatate but hopefully get enough to have a good response. I don't think that they are not so much dissatisfied, but we are like you trying to get their envolvement in the education of their children.
